Abstract
Chinese has been an official language in China
for more than two millennia. There is no need to adopt English
as another official language. Unlike Malaysia or the Philippines,
Taiwan has never been a British or American colony. For the
Republic of China to adopt English as its second official language
is beneath its national dignity. Furthermore, it probably
could not afford – financially – to have all government publications
printed in English, should it decide to make English one
of its official languages.
After all, Chinese is one of the six official
languages in use in the United Nations. It is also regarded
by Jose Vera, a Spanish Nobel Prize winner, as one of the four
most important languages in the 21st century.
